What to research first

Check module dependencies in the client. Start with the gun if available; unlock the turret if the gun needs it. Research suspension if you lack load capacity, then the engine. Avoid spending Free XP on optional modules just to move up.

Common mistake

Stopping for too long after firing and exposing the cupola.
